Companions' Programme 1996

The Linac96 Local Organizing Committee has arranged activities for the accompanying guests as well as information packages of alternate attractions for individuals.

Tickets for the various programmes on August 26, 27 and 29 1996 can be obtained at the Registration Desk in the Penta. Please do not prepay for these trips, as they will depend on the level of interest.

Buses will leave from the entrance of the Penta.

In order to help us organize this programme, please complete the Companions' Programme Form that you received with your letter of invitation, indicating outings that your companion(s) might be interested in, and return it to the Linac96 Secretariat as soon as possible, or indicate your interests on the electronic registration form if you are using a browser that supports forms or, if not, print out the text form, fill it in and e-mail (linac96@www.cern.ch) or post it back to the Linac96 Secretariat.


Monday, August 26, 1996, Geneva (1/2 day)

Approximate cost CHF 19.- including transport, guide and entrance fee (meals not included).

We will start with a bus tour of Geneva along the lake shore with peaceful parks and the famous water fountain that has become the symbol of Geneva. Walking through the old town we take you through narrow streets to the St. Peter's Cathedral and its archaeological excavations, the Maison Tavel (14th century) and the Town Hall. The Reformers' Wall gives us a survey of the religious Reformation that took place in Geneva. Crossing the river Rhône we reach the international Geneva with the world organizations and the European agency of the United Nations. A visit to the International Red Cross Museum is planned.


Tuesday, August 27, 1996"Salt, bread and wine" (Full day excursion)

Approximate cost CHF 49.- including transport, entrance fee and wine tasting.

Visit of the salt mine in Bex (Vaud), the only working salt mine in Switzerland accessible to the public.

We will then go to the "Bread and Wheat House" in Echallens, a living crafts museum representing 8000 years of the history of man and bread.

On our way back to Geneva we will stop at a wine cellar where you will have the opportunity to taste various regional wines.


Thursday, August 29, 1996 Yvoire, France* (1/2 day)

Approximate Cost CHF 35.- including transport by bus and boat (meals not included).

On Thursday we will make a boat trip from Geneva to the medieval town of Yvoire in France. Visit of the village, free time for browsing in the many handicraft shops.


Thursday, August 29, 1996 Chamonix, France* (Full-day excursion)

Approximate cost CHF 58.- including all transport (see programme).

The bus will take us to the well known skiing resort of Chamonix (Mont-Blanc) in France (80 km south of Geneva). A cable-car brings us to Plan de l'Aiguille (2310m), we then walk to Montenvers (1913m) and from there down to the "Mer de Glace" a magnificent glacier, 7 km long and 1200 m wide. Back to Montenvers by cable-car and descent to Chamonix by rack-and-pinion railway

*Please get a French visa in your home country if you wish to visit Yvoire and/or Chamonix and if your particular nationality requires you to have a visa for France.
